We know Adam Driver has no plans to return to Lena Dunham’s Girls reboot, but what about the Star Wars franchise? Any chance fans will see Kylo Ren again?

“Yeah, yeah, it’s over,” Driver said this week on The Rich Eisen Show podcast with regard to the possibility that he’d return to play Kylo Ren. “No more Star Wars. We tried. We tried to do one more, but they were like, no, he’s dead.”

The character was killed off in The Rise of Skywalker (2019), although Driver says on the podcast that she and Steven Soderbergh had indeed worked on a standalone Kylo Ren movie that never came to fruition.

“We got a script together that was really good with Scott Burns and Rebecca Blunt,” Driver tells Eisen about the standalone project that had the working title The Hunt for Ben Solo. “We all worked on it. It was awesome. It was really cool.”

“They didn’t see how Ben Solo was alive,” he said. “And that was that.”

Driver points out that ultimately the decision of whether or not to bring back the character isn’t his to make. “If they wanted to, fine, but it’s not our call,” the actor said. “I think the ship has sailed, though.”

Driver is currently starring in James Gray’s Paper Tiger along with Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller. Set in 1986 Queens, NY, the film follows two brothers who become entangled in a scheme that ends up involving the Russian mafia. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and is being released November 13 by Neon.

Extreme corporate malpractice in how Star Wars was handled, down to the refusal to let anyone try and salvage the good will they built before they dashed it all with episode IX. Of course people would have watched a Kylo movie. They liked Driver as that character. But the Lucasfilm team seem convinced that Star Wars’ appeal is something far more convoluted than enjoying certain actors portraying certain characters. God knows they acted like bringing back Ford, Fisher, and Hamill was some burden they couldn’t shake off fast enough.

They thought people cared about the Star Wars “universe” rather than the actual characters. No one cares about some random alien planet unless it’s one of the characters we know and love landing there.
