EXCLUSIVE: Paul W.S. Anderson, the filmmaker known for his work on six Resident Evil films, is set to direct Nether Station and Nether Vortex, film adaptations of the sci-fi horror books from bestselling author Kevin J. Anderson.

The novels follow Cammie Skoura, a brilliant, neurodivergent young scientist aboard a deep-space expedition that uncovers a trail of ancient ruins and long-dead alien civilizations leading toward a mind-shattering discovery. Cammie is described as a character the vein of Beth Harmon, Anya Taylor-Joy’s chess prodigy from the hit Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit. She anchors a story that fuses space exploration with the cosmic dread Weird Tales has published since its founding in 1923.

For W.S. Anderson, the duology marks a return to the cosmic horror genre that he explored early in his career with Event Horizon, the 1997 Paramount film starring Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan and Joely Richardson. Notably, author Anderson has cited that title as a direct influence on Nether Station. He released Nether Vortex via Blackstone Publishing’s imprint Weird Tales Presents on October 27, three years after Nether Station.

“Space is scary—think of how terrifying it would be all alone out in the cold, dark, oblivion?” Anderson said of the inspiration behind his books. “I tried to put all my fears and paranoia into Nether Station, and powerful films like Event Horizon were extremely influential in the writing. I couldn’t imagine a better director for this project than Paul W.S. Anderson.”

Jonathan Wakeham, a screenwriter with credits like Midas Man, To Catch a Killer and TNT limited series High Value Target: The Hunt for Saddam, will adapt the screenplays for the two films. W.S. Anderson will produce both alongside Jeremy Bolt (Event Horizon, Death Race), Weird Tales President John Harlacher and Weird Tales VP of film Tony Eldridge (The Equalizer franchise).

The filmmaker told us, “I’ve been a long term fan of Kevin’s work and to say it is cinematic is an understatement. I was thrilled to read Nether Station, the galleys of its sequel and also talk in detail with him about how he plans to expand the terrifying universe that he is creating. Lovecraftian cosmic horror, as experienced by a unique, young central character in Cammie Skoura, has all the ingredients for an unbelievably compelling and terrifying cinema experience.”

As a director, W.S. Anderson is coming off In the Lost Lands, a post-apocalyptic actioner starring his longtime Resident Evil lead Mila Jovovich, alongside Dave Bautista. He is repped by Ken Kamins of Key Creatives.

Kevin J. Anderson’s past activity in film & TV includes serving as co-producer on both Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two and HBO Max’s Dune: Prophecy. This came about after co-writing a number of prequels and sequels to Frank Herbert’s sci-fi masterwork Dune alongside the author’s son, Brian Herbert. He is repped by Zero Gravity Management and Weintraub Tobin Chediak.

Wakeham is repped by Independent Talent Group and Lit Entertainment Group, whose Adam Kolbrenner also reps Weird Tales, alongside Brittney Brunelle and Lesley Sabga at The Seymour Agency.
